(GERMANY). Volume of Telegrams: Wedding congratulations. Text in German. Manuscript in various hands. pp. 150. Boards. 4to. Baden-Baden 1910. This is a guest book where on each page is recorded a pasted or written message of congratulations sent to a Jewish family named Kahn celebrating a wedding in the spa town of Baden-Baden. The wedding party took place at the Englischer Hof, a hotel made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as it is the setting for his story The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax. Typical messages are in German, with many in Hebrew written in German letters (such as “chosen vekalle masel ubroche simche vesosaun kol hamishpoche” - “[To] Bride and Groom, Mazal and blessings, joy and celebration to the whole family”). One of the entries is from the Plato family, a branch of the Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch family based in London.
