Philippson surrounded by dramatic historiated border featuring fanciful scenes of Jewish soldiers at prayer; banners in red with Hebrew prayers. Discolored, light stains at top, creased. 13 x 18 inches. Berlin, Julius Levit, circa, 1870. A rare example of the celebrated - but mythological - Yom Kippur Service at Metz, in which Jewish soldiers from opposing armies came together in prayer during the Franco-Prussian War.
