FINE CIVIL WAR M PRESENTATION SAUERBIER OFFICER SWORD. Fancy sword in untouched condition inscribed on scabbard: “Presented to / Major Jones Franklin [JONAS FRANKLE] 17th Mass. Vols. / from his officers / Camp Andrew 1861.” Grip with elaborate eagle, US, and scrollwork. Wire wrap original and complete. Blade fully etched. Brass and leather scabbard complete; leather somewhat dry. HIGH GRADE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION SWORD GIVEN TO Brevet Brigadier General Jones (Jonas) Frankle. Prussian-born Jonas Frankle (1829-1909) joined the 17th Massachusetts Infantry on August 1, 1861 with the rank of major. The regiment was assigned to the Department of North Carolina where it took part in the battles of Kinston, Whitehall, and Goldsboro. On December 28, 1863 Frankle (then known as Jones Franklin) assumed command of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery with the rank of colonel where he commanded nearly two thousand men. They largely guarded the coastal forts in North Carolina. Frankle was promoted to brevet brigadier general on September 3, 1865. A showpiece for the most advanced collection. “In an article published in The Israelite, [Frankle’s] appointment was celebrated: ‘A friend calls our attention to the fact that also in this Know Nothing state a Hebrew was elected to a high military office. Mr. Jonas Frenkel [sic] was elected Major of the 17th Mass. Volunteer Reg.
