HERSHFIELD, LEWIS H. Group of nine engraved bank checks from the Banking House of L. H. Hershfield of Helena, Montana. Printed with manuscript entries. All are signed by Hershfield, or his brother and partner, Aaron. Majority made out to Chinese individuals. Vignette of a Western prospector with his dog. All with US Revenue stamps, some with high Scott catalogue value. Neat cut cancellations. Helena, Montana 1874-75. Lewis H. Hershfield (1836-1910) was originally of Oneida, NY. After stints in St. Louis, and Leavenworth, Kansas, he relocated to Colorado when “the great gold excitement broke out.” After making a fortune from the acquisition of a great quantity of gold dust, he established a bank, which his brother Aaron joined as partner.
