Prussian-born Gustavus Poznanski (1804-79) was the Cantor and religious leader of Congregation Beth Elohim, Charleston, and a pioneer of Reform Judaism in the Antebellum South. Among his four children, his son Gustavus Poznanski, Jr. (1842–62) served as a private in the Confederate States Army (CSA) during the American Civil War. He was killed in action in the Battle of Secessionville.
