(New York), 6th May, 1889. Born in a small town in the German Rhineland, August Belmont (1813-90) grew to become a renowned American financier, diplomat, and politician. He served as Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 1860 to 1872. He was also a thoroughbred racehorse owner and the founder and namesake of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown of American Thoroughbred horse racing. Author Edith Wharton reputedly modeled on Belmont the character of Julius Beaufort in her novel The Age of Innocence.
