Philadelphia, 31st July, 1861 Of distinguished Sephardic ancestry, Jacob da Silva Solis-Cohen (1838-1927) was the founder of the study and treatment of laryngology in the United States. Solis Cohen had the rare (if not unique) distinction of serving in the Civil War in a state regiment, a regular US Army regiment, as well as the US Navy.
