LIEBER, FRANCIS. Autograph Letter Signed, expressing thanks for “the copy of the Acts of Congress 2c, 1840 and the Senate’s response.” One page. Columbia, SC, 31st March, 1842 Born in Berlin, Francis (Franz) Lieber (1798-1872) served in the Prussian Army and was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo and later fought in the Greek War of Independence. He relocated to South Carolina where he achieved prominence as a jurist and philosopher. Although a slaveholder he supported the Union during the Civil War. At the behest of the Union army, Lieber authored the Code of Conduct which has evolved to become the Geneva Convention. Three of Lieber’s sons served in the Civil War (two Union, one Confederate).
