LEVY, SAMUEL YATES. (1827-87). Autograph Letter Signed. Written to (former) Confederate General Lafayette McLaws. Levy asks to have his membership in the Confederate Veterans Association continued despite recent illness. One page. 8vo. Savannah, 8th August, 1887 Levy died very shortly after this letter was sent, in which he poignantly states: “You know that my heart is with everything associated with ‘The Lost Cause.’” Brother of Phoebe Levy Pember and Eugenia Levy Phillips, Samuel Y. Levy was born in Charleston and grew up to practice law in Savannah. He was also author of the play “The Italian Bride” published in 1856. During the Civil War Levy rose to the rank of major, serving in the First Volunteer Regiment of Georgia. He was captured in June, 1864 at Marietta and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner at Johnson’s Island.
