(JEWS IN CIVIL WAR). Autograph Letter Signed, written to “my dear Hattie” by Captain William W. Dorr, of the 121st Pennsylvania Infantry. Letter has much interesting information on the events taking place at that place and time. Jewish officers CAPTAINS JOSEPH ROSENGARTEN AND CHARLES ETTING  prominently mentioned (see below). Six pages. 8vo. Camp, near White Oak Church, Virginia, 13th January, 1862 An account of an anti-Semite overcoming his prejudice, Dorr writes: “You can have no idea how the nobler qualities of Rosengarten have come out since our number of line officers has become reduced. I have learned from being prejudiced against him to like him very much.” Dorr continues to mention Rosengarten’s aid to fellow soldiers (including Etting). On his maternal side, Dorr was a descendant of the Chief Justices Lynde (father and son) of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; the Reverend Increase Mather and the Reverend John Eliot, the ”Apostle to the Indians.” Dorr was killed in action on May 10th, 1864, at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/52098789/william-white-dorr.
