ALMAN, JUSTINIAN. Pay-voucher for this Captain of the Fifth Pennsylvania Cavalry, paying him and his Black servant $125.52. Large printed document with manuscript additions, signed by Alman four times. Old tape repair on verso. 16 x 11 inches. 24th December, 1864 Ohio born Justinian Alman (1841-68) initially enlisted as private in 5th US Cavalry in 1860 and served in 1st, 2nd and 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry regiments, taking part in many battles. Alman captured many prisoners and supplies at White House on the Pamunkey River. He later joined the 4th US Cavalry and resigned in 1866 with the rank of major. Alman perished in a river boat accident at Jefferson, Texas and was buried in Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Jefferson, Marion Co., Texas. See https://shapell.org/civil-war-soldier-database/soldier/13464.
