Richmond, Va., 16th February, 1864 HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT DOCUMENT  Initiating the inquiry into one of the most successful prison breaks of the American Civil War. Born in New Orleans, Major Alexander Hart (1839-1911) commanded the Fifth Louisiana Infantry in many battles including Gettysburg. He was known to have observed Passover during the war. Subsequently he established synagogues in Staunton and Harrisonburg, Virginia.
