This includes two important letters from the United States regarding Edgardo Mortara (Lot 31); an exceptionally rare E.M. Lilien livre-de-artiste (Lot 150); an impressive 18th-century plate-book featuring the Holy Land (Lot 156); a recently discovered illustrated letter by Arthur Szyk (Lot 199).

CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH.

Posed in full Confederate uniform cradling his sword. Identified on verso in period pencil: “Capt. M. Levy/ CSA.” No photog imprint. Three-cent green Proprietary revenue stamp affixed on verso.

Michael Levy served as an ordnance officer supplying large quantities of ammunition to Generals John Hunt Morgan and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Levy’s regiment sustained heavy losses at Shiloh; his brother Julius was killed in action in that battle.
