(ENGLISH BOARD GAME). The New and Fashionable Game of the Jew.

Multicolor fold out game with a Jew at center portrayed in Oriental garb, i.e. the stereotypical Jewish banker hoarding his money. Engraved sheet mounted in 12 sections, laid on a single folded sheet of linen, housed in a cardboard slipcase, with a hand-coloured illustration pastedown.
Short tear at top right along fold, light wear. 48 x 42 cm (unfolded).

London, J. Wallis, 1807.

The game is similar to Glückshaus-style gambling boards and is played using two dice.

“The aim… was to collect as many counters as possible to emulate the stereotypical Jewish banker pictured in the centre of the board with his money bags. The Broadway composer and collector Stephen Sondheim has laconically described it as a game that 'taught kids to be anti-semitic' - but he owns a copy and many other games collectors aspire to own one too.” (Antiques Trade Gazette, 4 April 2013).

Another copy of this game featured in the exhibition: “Jews, Money, Myth, " Jewish Museum London (2019).
