Large single sheet (18 x 12 inches) fully written in brown period ink. Large “10” blue postal markings.
One page + address panel on verso. Folds.
Buena Vista, Mexico, 4th July 1847.


    SIGNIFICANT MEXICAN WAR LETTER.

    Written by then Second Lieutenant William Mallory Levy, Company F, 1st regiment Virginia Volunteers.

    Amidst reports of drills and parades Levy states: “I suppose the damned war will not last days. I wish to God we could have a good fight and be done with it.”


    William Levy (1827-82) was born in Isle of Wight, Virginia and graduated William and Mary in 1844, after which he relocated to Louisiana. Levy served as a Major in the Confederate army and commanded the Second Louisiana Infantry. Levy briefly served in Congress, 1875-77 and is included in “List of Jewish Members of the United States Congress.”
