CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH of First Lieutenant Isaac May. Chest-up view in civilian attire. Identified in pencil with erroneous unit attribution.

Photographer: Mahlers, Alexandria, Va.

Isaac May (1843-1905) was aide-de-camp to Governor Andrew Curtin of Pennsylvania.

First Lieutenant of Company E, 48th Pennsylvania Infantry, May’s regiment contained many of the miners who dug the tunnel that created an explosion at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg, Va. May.

The Shapell Manuscript Foundation has corrected May’s military service and clearly established him to be Jewish as he received a religious burial. See www.shapell.org/civil-war-soldier-database/soldier/13053.
