Theodor Minnis Etting (1846-1927) was born into one of Philadelphia’s oldest and prominent Jewish families. Left University of Pennsylvania in 1862, his sophomore year, and joined US Navy as Acting Midshipman. He subsequently graduated from the US Naval Academy. Honorably left the Navy in 1877 with the rank of lieutenant.
