PHOTOGRAPH by W.H. Tipton of the Dedication of the 82nd Illinois Infantry Monument at Gettysburg. 1891.
Framed. 7.5 x 9 inches.

82nd ILLINOIS INFANTRY MONUMENT AT GETTYSBURG. Rare photograph in its original wood frame and glass.

The 82nd was the only Illinois infantry regiment to take part in the Battle of Gettysburg. It suffered 112 casualties (killed, wounded, or captured). Many Jews were in the ranks, including the all-Jewish Company C (Concordia Guard), and many other co-religionists scattered throughout the unit.

This rare photograph depicts the dedication of the 82nd Illinois monument in the field at Gettysburg in 1891. Captain Joseph B. Greenhut of Company K was the chairman of the unit’s monument commission and the brother-in-law of Jewish co-religionist Edward Sellig Salamon, who commanded the regiment in that battle. On July 2, 1863 Greenhut commanded the detail to clear the town of Confederate snipers.

Greenhut is the “moonfaced” man seen immediately to the right of the monument. Salomon is posed in the foreground.
