Warasdin (Varasd, Varaždin), Croatia March 2nd, 1835 A eulogy delivered in the Warasdin synagogue by the town rabbi, for Emperor Franz II of the Holy Roman Empire, the founding Emperor of Austria; King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia; he also served as the first president of the German Confederation. The Jewish community of Varaždin formally began with Emperor Joseph II’s 1782 Edict of Toleration, permitting Jewish settlement in the area. Forbidden from owning land, farming or engaging in any guild-protected trade, most Jews were merchants. They were largely successful and the Jews of Varaždin were responsible for the construction of the first Jewish school in Croatia, completed in 1826 as well as a magnificent synagogue built in the Neo-Moorish style a few decades later. The present eulogy highlights the complex relations between the Jews of the Austrian Empire and their government, which repeatedly denied them equality and freedom of occupation.
