Austrian Jews had been informally working as pharmacists since the 17th century, attested to by a privilege issued by Emperor Leopold in 1671 barring Jews from dispensing medicine to Christians, due to the alleged poor quality of their service. However, it appears that this rule was often overlooked, especially during the reign of Joseph II. However, possibly as a reaction to Joseph’s leniency, the present document explicitly bans all Jewish involvement in the profession. The ban lasted for more than three decades until it was overturned in 1860. Austrian Jews were finally fully emancipated by 1867.
