David Sperber was a leading Romanian rabbi in Brașov, central Transylvania from 1925-1950. He authored the responsa Afarsekta De’Anya, Michtam LeDavid and other compositions. Raised into a family of Vizhnitz Chassidim, R. Sperber was a disciple of both Rabbi Moshe Hager of Kosov and R. Meir Arik. R. Sperber’s presence in Rumania in the years after the Holocaust provided support to a great many survivors and instrumental in the freeing of countless Agunoth. He was a key figure in the re-internment of Admor R. Yisroel Hager of Vizhnitz, accompanying the remains from Oradea to Bnei Brak. R. Sperber subsequently settled in Eretz Israel, where he was appointed to be a member of the Mo’etzes Gedolei HaTorah until his death. (See Otzar HaRabbanim 5075).
