(SATMAR). Group of c. 10 Items Relating to the Satmar Rebbe’s Trips to Eretz Israel and Italy. Includes: * Autograph letter by R. Yosef Ashkenazi, Gabbai of R. Yoel Teitelbaum. With Asheknazi’s signature and stamp, on the Rebbe’s letterhead. Addressed to Eliezer Ashkenazi in Bari, Italy. With envelope. 1945. * Note by Rebbetzen Chana Teitelbaum, daughter of R. Chaim Zvi Teitelbaum the Atzei Chaim and niece of the Satmar Rebbe. Written by her brother-in-law R. Shmuel Shmelke Rubin in Padua to Eliezer Ashkenazi in Bari, coordinating the Rebbe’s arrival. 1950. * Letter to Lazar Ashkenazi from Carl Nissim in Italian, arranging the transport of the Satmar Rebbe’s books in Italy. Elul, 1965. E. Israel & Italy, 1945-1965. Upon the passing of R. Zelig Reuven Bengis, R. Yoel Teitelbaum, the Satmar Rav, was declared head of the Eidah Chareidis. Under his watchful eye, the organization grew in numbers and strength, creating a powerful opposition to the State of Israel. In this context, the Rebbe visited Eretz Israel a number of times. So too, both to recuperate from the stresses of leadership, as well as to bolster Italian Jewry, the Satmar Rav visited Italy in the 1950’s – a country he had previously passed through on his way out of Nazi Europe.
