Its development was spearheaded by Ashkenazic members of Jerusalem’s Old Yishuv, who sought a solution to the dire conditions within the Old City. Construction began in 1909, and, over the course of the following century, the neighborhood retained its religiously conservative yet charming character, in line with the vision of its founders. Notable rabbis to have lived there include R. Ya’akov Moshe Charlap, R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, R. Shmuel Auerbach, R. Sholom Schwadron and the Tchebiner Rov.
