Max Friedman (c.1825-1900) was one of the highest-ranking Jewish officers to serve in the U.S. Civil War. He enlisted as a Colonel in Company F&S of the 5th PA Cavalry on August 3, 1861. He then organized and commanded the 5th PA Cavalry, also known as the Cameron Dragoons, a unit with numerous Jewish soldiers. Friedman’s short time in the military was shrouded in controversy. He was investigated – though never charged – by the U.S. government for various forms of fraud. Friedman resigned and was discharged on March 9, 1862.
