(AMERICAN-JUDAICA). CABINET PHOTOGRAPH of Myer Asch, Brevet Major, First New Jersey Cavalry. Chest-up view. Photograph by Gutekunst, Philadelphia. Myer Asch returned from Paris to take part in the war. A distinguished horse soldier, he commanded Company H. He participated in the war’s most famous cavalry battles and was present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Asch commanded the George Meade Post, Grand Army of the Potomac. In Philadelphia he served as Secretary of the U.S. Centennial Commission held in Philadelphia in 1876. He signed the verso of this photo in the latter capacity in 1876.
