Initially served in Company D, 121st Pennsylvania Infantry. Distinguished for valor at the Battle of Fredericksburg. As a result Rosengarten was appointed ordnance officer on the staff of General John F. Reynolds. At the Battle of Gettysburg Reynolds became the highest ranking officer to be killed. Rosengarten received the honor to escort Reynold’s body to Lancaster for burial.
