(AMERICAN-JUDAICA). CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH of Leopold C. Newman, Lieutenant Colonel, 31st New York Infantry. Autographed by Newman in brown period ink. Photographer: B. P. Paige, Washington, D. C. Exceedingly rare image of Newman. Standing view in uniform, holding the “Shapka” Polish army hat that was unique to his regiment. An attorney in Brooklyn, Newman joined as captain of Company B of the 31st. He rose in rank to Lieutenant Colonel and assumed command of the regiment at the Chancellorsville Campaign. Severely wounded on May 3, 1863 in Fredericksburg resulting in the amputation of a leg. He died in New York on June 7th. See Adam D.
