Initially served in companies I and E of the 15th Missouri Infantry. Took part in battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. Later joined U. S. Volunteers, Quartermaster Department. Served the entire duration of the war. At the end of the war, Isenstein was appointed to command a quartermaster regiment.
