(CHASSIDISM). Michtav… M’E[retz] HaK[odesh] M’Rabo[theinu] HaK[edoshim] [”a collection of epistles of early Chassidic masters.”] Letters of R. Yisrael of Polotzk, R. Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, R. Avraham of Kalisk, R. Leib Heneles, R. Shneur Zalman of Liadi and R. Chaim Chaikel of Amdur. Spanning the years 1778-92. Hebrew Manuscript on paper. Aschkenazic cursive hand. ff. 212-243 (i.e. ff. 32). First and final leaves frayed, browned. Disbound. 4to. c. 1850.     From their first appearance in print in 1794, these fascinating letters - which reflect both sociological conditions in the early Chassidic movement, as well as theological concerns - have often been reprinted, although each edition varies slightly. The present manuscript demonstrates variants from the printed editions. PROVENANCE: Formerly in the collection of the late Prof. Abraham I. Katsh (1908-98) who possibly acquired it during the course of academic trips to the Soviet Union commencing in 1956.
