    R. Yitzchak ben Reuven of Barcelona was an 11th century Spanish sage. A contemporary of the Ri’f - R. Isaac Alfasi, he served as dayan in the coastal city of Denia (Costa Blanca). Unfortunately, his commentaries to the Talmud have been lost, but his Azharoth, liturgical poetry incorporating all 613 Mitzvoth, are found in the liturgy of many Oriental communities.

In his Introduction to Sefer HaMitzvoth, Ramba’m critiqued these popular Azharoth as they were written, ‘by poets and not rabbis.’ Later rabbis have debated whether Ramba’m intended to include Al-Bargeloni in this critique or not, considering the latter’s rabbinical ordination. (See Shem HaGedolim, Ma’arecheth HaSeforim, ‘Pay.’).
