Magdeburg, first edition 1581 (or later): THE FAMED CLOVER-LEAF MAP OF THE WORLD. This celebrated figurative illustration depicts the world as three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa - on a cloverleaf projection with Jerusalem at the center. (The continent of America is found in at bottom-left corner of the map, with the caption “The New World”). An enormous replica of the map map is displayed outside of Jerusalem’s City Hall today, underscoring its symbolic significance to the inhabitants of the Holy City and vice versa.
