WINKLER, MORDECHAI LEIB
(Av Beth Din and Rosh Yeshiva of Madd, Hungary, author of Responsa Levushei Mordechai, 1845-1932). Autograph Letter Signed written in Hebrew to Rabbi Asher Anshel Yuda Miller.

Rav Winkler apologizes that he has not gotten a chance to review and write an approbation for the book Shemen Asher that his correspondent had sent to him – concluding that such an illustrious author needs no approbation.

Mád, Hungary: 13th Nissan 1929

A disciple of the Ksav Sofer and R. Yitzchok Aaron Landsberg, R. Winkler was the leading Hungarian Posek during the first decades of the 20th century, penning over 1500 responsa (including six to the recipient of this letter, Rav Asher Anshel Yuda Miller), collected in Levushei Mordechai. As this letter attests, he was also asked to write approbations (haskamot) to many works.

This letter was printed as part of the front matter of several subsequent works by R. Miller (see www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx? req=113&st=&pgnum=5).

R. Asher Anshel Yuda Miller (1880-1960) was the rav of Petrosani, Transylvania (Romania) and other communities. He emigrated to Eretz Israel after the war. The work Olamo shel Abba, a detailed description of religious life in pre-WWII Hungary, is based on accounts that R. Miller reported to his son, Pinchas.
