SCHMELKES, YITZCHAK
(Rabbi of Brezan, author of Responsa Beth Yitzchak, 1828-1906).

Autograph Letter Signed written in Hebrew to Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchak Schor, Av Beth Din of Monastrishtch (Monastyrys’ka, Ukraine) and Kniehenitch (Knyahynychi, Ukraine), author of Responsa Minchath Shai. Responsum concerning a Get (writ of divorce) which may include the wrong name of the husband. Rabbi Schmelkes confirms the validity of the original Get if it would be difficult to secure a replacement.
Two pages.
Berezhany, Ukraine: 1869

This is the original manuscript of the responsum published in Shailoth U’Teshuvot Beth Yitzchak 2:18.

The question to which R. Schmelkes responds was written by R. Shmuel Yitzchak Schor (1839-1902), who was rabbi of several towns in Galicia and the author of She’eilot U-Teshuvot Minchat Shai. He was also the grandfather of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel.

Only the first part of the responsum appears. The other side of the leaf is written by a different hand and is crossed out. The stamp of Rabbi Yeshaya Kalish, Av Beth Din of Bratislava (Pressburg) appears.
