Settled in Eretz Israel in 1934, having been a student of the Alter of Novardhok (R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz, 1847-1919). Author of Kehilath Ya'akov on the Talmud, Karyana D'Igarta, a collection of his letters on a wide variety of topics, and other works. He married the sister of the Chazon Ish. The Steipler's only son is Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky (b. 1928), the singular most important rabbinic leaders of the Lithuanian community in Israel today (as was his father).
