An invitation to “the American Minister” to dinner “on Sunday next.” Written on behalf of Lionel de Rothschild (1808-79) and his wife Charlotte (1819-84) from their London home, 148 Piccadilly. This invitation was extended to US Ambassador (and later President) James Buchanan, along with his niece and professional companion, Miss Harriet Lane. One page with integral blank. Small tear upper right corner. 8vo. (London): c. (1854) US President Franklin Pierce appointed James Buchanan American Minister to Great Britain. Beginning in 1854, Harriet Lane accompanied her uncle to London. When Buchanan, a life-long bachelor, returned to the US, he was elected President and Harriet joined him in the White House.
