Chinese Carved Wood Emperor & Empress Wall Masks - A pair of hand-carved wooden decorative wall masks, depicting male and female figures likely representative of an emperor and empress from Chinese folklore. There are also faint, illegible characters incised into the wood on the reverse of the male mask near the brass hanger. Height: 6 inches Width: 4.5 inches Depth: 2.5 inches. The masks are in good overall antique condition. The male mask shows a horizontal age crack running through the hair on the right side and another crack through the dragon motif on the upper left. A small chip is visible on the tip of the left headdress. The female mask remains largely intact on the front, though surface cracks are visible on the reverse side. Both pieces exhibit minor scattered scuffs and small finish chips consistent with handling.
