Bidspirit auction | Gold-Filled & Mother-of-Pearl Parasol Handle
Gold-Filled & Mother-of-Pearl Parasol Handle - This antique parasol or presentation-style cane handle and partial shaft features an L-shaped grip carved from iridescent mother-of-pearl or shell, characterized by visible growth lines and a decorative scalloped top edge. The handle is joined to the polished dark wood shaft by a long gold-filled or rolled gold collar featuring an embossed floral pattern of daisies and chrysanthemums. A smooth, shield-shaped cartouche is present on the collar, left unengraved. The base of the visible shaft section terminates in a mechanical metal ferrule with a locking slot. This metal component is stamped with ”PAT'D” followed by numerical digits, including ”2-1,” indicating a patented mechanism, likely for a system cane or parasol attachment. Handle Length: 3 inches Collar Length: 1.5 inches Total Visible Length: 9 inches. The item is in good antique condition with signs of age and use. The mother-of-pearl handle shows small dark pockmarks and inherent natural inclusions. The gold-filled collar displays surface oxidation and light wear to the high points of the floral relief. A significant surface gouge is present on the wooden shaft where the finish has been removed. The mechanical metal tip shows heavy tarnishing and surface wear consistent with age; the locking mechanism is present but untested for operational functionality.
