Veres Russian Hand-Painted Folklore Nesting Dolls - Two sets of hand-painted wooden Russian nesting dolls including one artist-signed folklore series and one traditional floral set. The five-piece folklore set features finely detailed illustrations of Russian characters and scenes, including a bogatyr warrior on a white horse, a maiden at a pier, Baba Yaga with her mortar and broom, a legendary memorial stone, and a crow. These narrative scenes are accented with gold leaf borders, while the reverse of each doll is decorated with a multi-colored floral bouquet. The base of the largest doll in this set is hand-signed in white ink with the Cyrillic characters Верес 5, which transliterates to Veres 5. The second five-piece set is executed in a traditional folk style characterized by large red flowers and green foliage against a black background, with simplified geometric patterns on the back. Folklore set height: 7 inches Floral set height: 4.25 inches. The dolls are in good overall vintage condition with the general character of age-related wear. The folklore set shows minor paint rubbing at the horizontal join seams and general shelf wear to the underside of the bases. A small area of paint loss is present on the smallest doll of the folklore set. The floral set has significant paint loss and exposed wood on the bottom of one doll.
