Bidspirit auction | Late 19th/Early 20th Century, Crayon

Late 19th/Early 20th Century, Crayon Portrait of a Woman - This mixed media portrait is executed in the crayon portrait style, a technique common in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras involving charcoal, pastel, and white chalk applied over a faint photographic base on toned paper. The verso is finished with a modern hardboard backing and a hanging wire. No signature, date, or inscription is visible on the front or the modern backing. Frame: 21.5 x 17.5 inches. The paper support displays visible toning and significant scattered foxing throughout. There are visible areas of staining and minor surface loss, primarily in the upper background sections. The gilded frame shows minor surface wear and small chips to the gesso consistent with age. The matting and backing materials are modern replacements.
