Papua New Guinea Sepik River Carved Wood Mask with Cowrie Shells and Fiber Fringe - This ceremonial-style mask is characteristic of the artistic traditions of the Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea, with stylistic elements associated with the Yuat River and Lower Sepik areas. The object is hand-carved from a single piece of wood and features a surface decorated with hand-painted swirling curvilinear patterns in black, white, and terracotta natural pigments. The lower portion of the face and the outer border are embellished with numerous small cowrie shells embedded into a thick layer of reddish clay or resin-based paste. A prominent, arched nose element is carved into the center, terminating in a small animal-head motif. The perimeter is adorned with a thick fringe of dark, hand-spun natural fiber lashed through small holes around the lower edge. A plume of variegated feathers is attached to the crown. The reverse side shows a darkened, uneven finish with visible lashing for the fiber fringe. No maker marks, signatures, or inscriptions are present on the item. Dimensions: 25 inches in length and 7 inches in width (including fiber fringe). The item is in good overall condition. The wooden structure is stable with no major cracks or structural damage. All cowrie shells appear to be present and intact within the resinous base. The natural pigments show minor fading and stabilization consistent with mid-to-late 20th-century production. The fiber fringe is largely intact with some thinning at the top and light dust accumulation in the crevices. The reverse side shows minor surface scuffing.
