Lega Carved Wood Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo - A Lega carved wood mask, possibly a 'Lukwakongo' or 'Passport Mask', presenting an elongated, ovoid form with stylized facial features. The mask is primarily a dark reddish-brown, contrasting with an off-white or light tan pigment, likely kaolin, applied to the central facial plane, encompassing the forehead, cheeks, and chin. It features almond-shaped eye slits, a prominent nose with two small circular nostrils, and a small, oval-shaped mouth. On the reverse, a black cord is threaded through drilled holes, and a small white sticker bears the inscription ”LA / 1720 / M”. Visible wood grain is present. Length: 10.5 inches
