Torah, Neviim and Ketuvim – Printed by Menasseh Ben Israel – Amsterdam, 1631-1635 – Fine Copy - Five Books of the Torah, Neviim and Ketuvim. Amsterdam: Menasseh Ben Israel, at the behest of Hendrick Laurentius, [1631-1635]. Fine copy, in early parchment binding (repaired). At the beginning of the volume is a title page with a copper engraving with the name of the printer and proofreader: ”Printed in Amsterdam, at the press of Menasseh Ben Israel, and proofread with loving devotion by him”. Additional title page in Latin, at beginning of volume. Divisional title pages for Neviim Rishonim, Neviim Acharonim and Ketuvim (on all three title pages, the date of printing is corrected to 1636, in the same hand). Complete Bible edition, with vocalization and cantillation, ”mightily accurate, with keri, ketiv, open and closed parashiot and deficient and plene letters like a Tikun for a Torah scroll”. One of the only Bible editions at the time printed by Jews. On verso of title page, statement of the proofreader, Menasseh Ben Israel, on the importance of his edition and his proofreading work. Two columns per page, like the Bible edition used for Goral HaGra, following a tradition transmitted in the Volozhin yeshiva from the Vilna Gaon. Signature on back endpaper: ”Yaakov son of Kalonymus HaLevi”. Four parts in one volume. Torah and Five Megillot: [1], 144 leaves. Neviim Rishonim: [145]-254 leaves. Neviim Acharonim: [255]-369 leaves, [1] blank leaf. Ketuvim: 124, [2] leaves. 23 cm. Good condition. Stains. Small marginal tears to several leaves. Inner margins of title page repaired with paper. Original parchment binding (with spine repaired). Defects to binding. Includes [2] leaves at the end of Ketuvim section – table of Haftarot for the whole year according to all customs, included in some copies only. Provenance: Collection of Mozes Heiman Gans. A small-format Bible edition was printed concurrently by Menasseh Ben Israel in 1630-1631. The present edition is in large format.
