Basel, 2nd half of the 16th cent. The book Cosmographia deals with geography, history, zoology, botany, ethnography and astronomy, and is accompanied by hundreds of maps and illustrations of countries and cities worldwide. The first German edition was published in 1544, and is considered the earliest German description of the world. Through time many additional editions were published in German, Latin, French, Italian and Czech. The leaf presented here was printed in one of the German editions of the book. Etching 37.5X15 cm, leaf 40X31 cm. Good condition. Central folding mark. Minor stains. Minor creases and tears to edges. In a passepartout.
