Collection of Printed Items – Egyptian Jewry – First half of the 20th Century
Twelve leaflets, booklets, cards and printed paper items, connected to the Jewish communities of Cairo and Alexandria. Cairo and Alexandria (most of them from Cairo), the first half of the 20th century (one item is from 1959). Hebrew, Arabic, French, English and Yiddish.
Among the items: * A postcard marking two years to the establishment of the theater group "Dem Judishen Filadramatishen Ferayen" in Cairo, 1909, with a picture of the actors of the group. * Invitation to a ceremony of Hachnassat Sefer Torah (celebration and parade of singing and dancing while bringing a new Torah scroll to the synagogue) "which was written from the donations of brothers the great of Palestine, while we were in the exile of Alexandria of Egypt during the war", [Alexandria, 1917]. * A card issued by the "Ezrat Nidachim" Association of Cairo – a request from a local physician to give free treatment to a refugee from Palestine [presumably, during the "Jaffa Deportation" in World War I]. Stamped with the stamp of the association, with the physician's name filled-in by hand. * Booklet for encouraging donations issued by the "Jewish National Fund" (in Hebrew, French and Arabic), with pictures of settlements, donation certificates and a map of Palestine. Cairo [ca. 1925]. * "HaBimah in Egypt", advertising poster for four plays. Cairo: La Rapide, 1931. * Illustrated donation certificate for the "Ahava and Achva Yeshiva and Talmud Torah" (not filled-in, numbered 1). Cairo: Bersano & Elimelekh, [1940s]. * And more.
