Interesting Letter from the Steipler - Recommendation to Reaccept a Chabad Student, Expelled from a Non-Chassidic Yeshiva for Studying Tanya with his Friends
Letter handwritten by the Steipler, with his full signature "Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky", addressed to the administration of the Chemed yeshiva. Bnei Brak, 1966. Recommendation for a student, a Chabad chassid, who was expelled from the Chemed yeshiva - a non-chassidic yeshiva - after he was discovered organizing a group for the study of the Tanya. The Steipler writes to the administration of the yeshiva: "The dear student Lipa Kurzweil came before me, and shared his worries with me, that he studied in Chemed and was successful in his studies, but since he is a Lubavitch chassid and studied the Tanya with others, the yeshiva administration did not agree with this and he was therefore expelled. He has now agreed to conform with the yeshiva requirements, and wishes to return, and I was asked to recommend him. And certainly, since I was told he is a Torah scholar who studies with diligence and fear of G-d, he is certainly very worthy of being warmly and readily admitted…". At the foot of the letter, a line in a different handwriting was added (presumably by one of the yeshiva staff members): "I, the undersigned, commit to behave according to yeshiva requirements", followed by the student's signature. [1] leaf. 24 cm. Good condition. Stains. Folding marks.
