Hanukkah Lamp with Image of Mattathias the Hasmonean – After Sculpture by Boris Schatz
Hanukkah lamp with image of Mattathias the Hasmonean. Unidentified manufacturer, Israel, [ca. 1950s].
Brass, cast.
Hanukkah lamp with arched back plate, with symmetrical pair of olive branches, the Hebrew words "Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me" (Exodus 32:26) and "These candles" (from early medieval Jewish prayer for Hanukkah by the same name). At center is the figure of Mattathias the Hasmonean, modeled after a sculpture by Boris Schatz. Row of square oil fonts in front. Servant light positioned to side of back plate.
The whereabouts of the original statue entitled "Mattathias the Hasmonean," sculpted by Boris Schatz in Paris in 1894 – wherein Mattathias is portrayed wielding a sword and standing over the body of a slain Seleucid soldier – are unknown today.
Height: 13 cm. Width: 21 cm. Fracture to back plate.
