A RARE AND IMPORTANT SILVER MEGILLAH CASE. Poland, 19th century. According to legend told by the collector Maximillian Goldstein, who lived in Lemberg in the 1920’s this piece was created by Baruch Dornhelm in the late 19th century in Lvov (Lemberg). Dornhelm would copy the style found in engraved prints from the seventeenth century and was clearly one of the premier Jewish silversmiths of his time. For many years, at the time, because of the style and accuracy of the repousee, many objects produced by Dornhelm were thought to be 17th and 18th century. Scenes include King Achashverus, the king coronating Queen Esther, the festive feast prepared by Queen Esther, the hanging of Haman and the Purim Seuda.
