Ca. 1800 German Silver Torah Shield, Augsburg - Rare and important German gilt silver Torah Shield, Augsburg, ca. 1800. Features four removable plates with names of Jewish holidays. Decorated with the Tablets of the Law, below them - David's harp, a pair of cornucopias and vine motifs. Shield flaked by a pair of pillars topped by rampant lions holding a crown with a sculpted eagle finial. Bottom decorated with bells. Dimensions (not including bells): 33X20 cm. Weight: 846 grams. Marked with maker's mark 'Bihler' and Augsburg city mark incorporating the date letter 'K' (probably 1799). The Shield is engraved with a 1827 Hebrew dedication by the Hoechstaedter family from the city of Mönchsdeggingen in southern Germany (near Augsburg), which had a small Jewish community since the second half of the 17th century. In 1997, all the gravestones in the city's Jewish cemetery were restored, cleaned and documented, thus commemorating the Hoechstaedter family. Minor flaws and missing parts.
