A RARE RUSSIAN PARCEL-GILT TULA STEEL SEWING BOX WITH TABLE CLAMP AND BIRD-FORM THREAD HOLDER, CIRCA 1810 - Russian, Tula, early 19th century. The rectangular polished-steel sewing box is raised on four ball feet and fitted beneath with its original screw-operated table clamp. The sides are applied with swags of darkened steel roses suspended from gilt-metal leaves, drapery, and rosettes. The domed slip-on cover is decorated with floral branches and gilt accents and surmounted by a stylized bird-form spring mechanism intended to hold thread. The underside of the cover is fitted with a burgundy fabric pincushion. The shaped clamp is embellished with complementary floral and gilt-metal ornament. Dimensions: 3 3/8 x 3 x 7 1/4 in., (8.6 x 7.6 x 18.4 cm.) Conditions: Good condition, with light oxidation throughout. Clamp mechanism functions well. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
