A RARE RUSSIAN PARCEL-GILT TULA STEEL SEWING BOX WITH BIRD-FORM THREAD HOLDER, CIRCA 1810 - Russian, Tula, early 19th century. The rectangular polished-steel sewing box raised on four ball feet, its sides applied with floral swags suspended from drapery and rosettes, enriched with gilt-metal borders and leaves. The domed slip-on cover is divided into four panels decorated with gilt leafy branches and darkened steel foliage. Its turned central standard supports a stylized bird-form spring mechanism intended to hold thread. The underside of the cover is fitted with a burgundy fabric pincushion. Dimensions: 3 3/8 x 2 7/8 x 4 1/4 in., (8.6 x 7.3 x 10.8 cm.) Conditions: Very good condition, with light oxidation to the surface. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
